This year I have used a modified cleft/bark graft and it has served me will. As with all grafting timing is paramount. Quality scion wood and the right cutting and make up of the two is necessary. I am pleased with the "take" and hope to further enhance the process. I am doing a little experimenting with making the T bud cut and then cutting a piece of scionwood like I was going to bark graft it and placing it in the T bud cut as if it were a bud. Using parafilm tape and water based compound to seal it appears to be working good also. If the bark is slipping good it makes it a lot easier to do this graft but on the modified cleft/bark graft it makes no difference. On the lighter side I woke up on morning and stumbled out to the nursery and made 5 of the modified clefts before I realized I was grafting persimmon onto Paw Paw rootstock...............kicked my rear as I cut off the new grafts and re-installed paw paw scion wood on the rootstock............just what happens when you get old and have those senior moments.
