Hi Everyone... Very Happy

I recently ordered from Stokes Tropicals a
" Little Gem Magnolia Tree," It arrived safely
through Fed Ex. It's 1 1/2 feet tall. About two
years ago I bought one from Walmart that was
fourt feet tall and it flowered like crazy , the
fragrance was awesome just like the Large
Magnolia Grandifloras you see in the south. What
I found out recently was my zone for Santa Fe NM
is zone 6 , so I plan to keep it in doors , Winter here
can be harsh , snow , high winds, right now they predict
a storm for tonight , I hope not. Photo enclosed.
I would recommend Stokes Tropicals very highly....

Cheers.Joe... Very Happy

We use 'Little Gem' in landscaping where larger grandifloras would not fit and we have been very pleased with them. They bloom while still small. Although the literature lists them as being hardy only through zone 7-I would be willing to trial it in your area in a site sheltered from wind in an acid soil.

That's a nice lil gem you have there!

Mine is a Southern Magnolia... My wife requested me to buy here that, and I know Southern Magnolias can be gigantic trees, and so I got the slowest growing that I can find and St. Mary Southern Magnolia it is... very slow growing indeed, but it has excellent flowers every year. I should have waited for the ultradwarf type. I don't like huge trees shading my house.

Beware of the roots. They can crack foundations if planted close to the house. A friend of mine had major damage to his pool from the roots of a tree about 20 ft away. Nice looking trees, but very messy in the fall.

When I transplanted 2 magnolia trees the roots were fine and fibrous. They didn't look like they would damage concrete to me.

Phil if you transplanted them they were small. I'm taking about when they are 50 + ft tall.

Don't you just love that intoxicating fragrance? I bought my wife a perfume years ago that smelled just like Magnolia grandiflora (at least to my nose) called Jessica McClintock. I loved it -perhaps too much Shocked So my sweet Pam claims that she no longer cares for the fragrance Crying or Very sad
Now you have the heart of Dixie blooming at you New Mexican home.

I have a little gem magnolia that is about 9' tall. You can tell it from regular southern magnolias from the brownish coloring under the leaves.
